He could live forever. But is he willing to pay the price?

It's 2099, and the former United States of America is in the midst of another civil war. In the wake of a revolutionary technology that grants people a second chance at life, an impenetrable wall divides the prosperous nation of Zion from the slums of MiddleLand. Stuck inside the wall and desperate to reunite with his fiancée, contraband smuggler Asher is hell-bent on finding a way out.

When his uncle offers him a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Asher is faced with an impossible task: impersonate a talented Zion soldier and risk his life in the Canonization, a brutal gladiator duel against a champion who never loses. But defeating an unbeatable opponent and reuniting with his one true love is only the beginning. Asher thought the second life policy was outlawed. But the truth is far more sinister, and he soon finds himself caught up in the middle of a terrifying rebellion that will decide the fate of both sides of the Wall.

As an explosive and futuristic sci-fi adventure that artfully weaves together high-octane action and heart-stopping romance, The Wall presents an unforgettable YA dystopia that's perfect for fans of Divergent, The Hunger Games, and Dune.

Fans of tense speculative novels of fallen near-future Americas will find themselves caught up in Penn’s debut, a dystopian Romeo-and-Juliet story with light Christian themes set in 2099 in a former U.S. riven by civil war—and just what the title promises. The conflict rages between the new nation of Zion, where prosperity is protected by crushing violence, and the impoverished MiddleLand, where food and hope are scarce—and a dangerous black market operation is the only source of protection and sustenance. Zion possesses technology that offers something like life after death. Zion's leader, the Sultan Renatus, will stop at nothing to keep control of Zion, his daughter, and the Wall separating the inhabitants of both nations, a “hundred-foot-high, near-translucent” barrier coursing with “100,000 volts of blue electrical current.”
Penn has crafted a fast-paced story that doesn't scrimp on character, romance, and a revolutionary impulse. The novel’s heart is the love between Asher, a contraband smuggler trying to survive in the MiddleLand, and Sarai, the daughter of Renatus, who has been forced into Zion by her father and brought into a second life, one where her every move is monitored. Asher is offered a shocking assignment: to be reborn by the technology that has divided the nation in order to infiltrate Zion by impersonating a top soldier.
Danger, heartbreak, and mystery are around every corner, including the discovery of what truly happened to Asher’s parents and the exposure of just how far the Sultan will go to heal a broken heart. Asher must survive Canonization, which is a nod to quests that gladiators had to try and withstand. If he does, he can become the most valuable spy the resistance could ever dream of and, unbelievably, win the hand of Sarai. There is a light-handed Christian element to the book but it is not overpowering or distracting to readers who might not be looking for religion as part of their literary experience.
Takeaway: Love and rebellion in a fallen near-future American dystopia.
