Eierman, who designs and manages garden and farm projects, has created an attractive, informative guide for gardeners who would like to grow fruit trees in small yards or containers. He begins with a general introduction to growing fruit trees, followed by a detailed guide to stone, pome, and citrus fruits. Each entry contains information on choosing and planting the young trees, cultural information, harvesting tips, pruning techniques, and advice on managing pests and diseases, followed by a sampling of suggested varieties with brief descriptions of each. While he provides general guidelines on where each fruit may be successfully grown, he recommends that gardeners contact local nurseries or their cooperative extension service for help in choosing varieties best suited to their region. Next he covers the details of orchard planting and care, pruning, and grafting. The book is illustrated with beautiful color photographs, and it concludes with recipes created by Mike Emanuel. VERDICT Beginning as well as experienced gardeners in the United States and Canada will find authoritative information here in an easy-to-use format.--Sue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL
