Greek mythology meets the Kardashians in Emily Roberson's Lifestyles of Gods and Monsters, a fresh, fast-paced young adult debut about celebrity culture, family dynamics, and finding love amidst it all.
Sixteen-year-old Ariadne's whole life is curated and shared with the world. Her royal family's entertainment empire is beloved by the tabloids, all over social media, and the hottest thing on television. The biggest moneymaker? The Labyrinth Contest, a TV extravaganza in which Ariadne leads fourteen teens into a maze to kill a monster. To win means endless glory; to lose means death. In ten seasons, no one has ever won.
When the gorgeous, mysterious Theseus arrives at the competition and asks Ariadne to help him to victory, she doesn't expect to fall for him. He might be acting interested in her just to boost ratings. Their chemistry is undeniable, though, and she can help him survive. If he wins, the contest would end for good. But if she helps him, she doesn't just endanger her family's empire—the monster would have to die. And for Ariadne, his life might be the only one worth saving.
Ariadne's every move is watched by the public and predestined by the gods, so how can she find a way to forge her own destiny and save the people she loves?

For a decade, Ariadne, 16, has been the Keeper of the Maze in the annual fight-to-the-death reality TV show The Labyrinth Contest, in which 14 Athenians try to kill the Minotaur. This year, Theseus, the newly rediscovered Athenian prince, has decided to join the contest himself. By slaying the Minotaur, who is also Ariadne’s brother, he hopes to put
an end to the death game. Complicating matters, Ariadne is attracted to Theseus, so when he asks
for her help, she must decide whether to aid in the murder of her little brother or let her crush be killed. In addition, the show has been losing ratings, and with best friend Icarus’s career in the balance, fame-shy Ariadne literally and figuratively removes her mask to help make this the most exciting season yet. In her debut, Roberson expertly modernizes Greek mythology with a very Kardashian twist. Ariadne’s older sisters even have their own reality show, The Paradoxes, which follows their lives and sexual conquests as young, rich, and beautiful princesses. Newcomers to the myths may have to educate themselves to grasp all of the references, but those familiar with the characters will delight in this thoroughly contemporary soap opera’s reinvented and updated world. Ages 14–up. Agent: Kerry Sparks, Levine Greenberg Rostan.

Hold onto your hat! Greek mythology meets reality TV in this audiobook--with a bit of dystopian novel thrown in, as well. Narrator Amanda Dolan keeps the story straight for listeners with her flexible voicings of the many extreme characters. Based on the myth of the Minotaur, the audiobook begins with backstory that is extremely bizarre because the events took place on a television show called "The Labyrinth Contest." Now teen Ariadne must lead 14 other teenagers into a maze to kill or be killed. When a boy asks for her help, things get even more complicated. Dolan breezes through as if it's all perfectly normal, adding verisimilitude to the author's careful world- building. Dolan fully fleshes out Ariande and ensures that her motives are clear. With quick transitions in tone and timbre, Dolan adds to the depth and believability of this cultural pastiche. S.K.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine
