Trouble is brewing for cousins Yale and Celine Yee after a hot pot dinner gets overheated and ends in murder in this second novel of the L.A. Night Market series by Jennifer J. Chow.
Yale and Celine Yee’s food stall business is going so well that they’ve been invited to join an exclusive dinner with the local restaurant owners association. The members gather together for a relaxing hot pot feast…until Jeffery Vue, president of the group, receives a literal shock to his system and dies.
Everyone at the meal is a suspect, but the authorities are homing in on family friend Ai Ho, owner of the restaurant where Jeffery was killed—and Yale’s dad is a close second on their list. Yale and Celine step up to the plate and investigate the dinner attendees: the association’s ambitious VP, a familiar frenemy, a ramen king, a snacks shopkeeper, and a second-generation restaurateur. It’s up to the detecting duo to figure out what really happened before their friends and family have to close their businesses for good.

In her second audiobook narration, Stephanie Sheh continues this cozy mystery series, capturing the joy, sense of community, and drama in L.A.'s night market. Yale and Celine Yee, cousins who run a food stall, dive into investigating the suspicious death of local restaurateur Jeffery Vue. Sheh appropriately portrays the characters, depicting people of various ages, genders, and ethnicities as she navigates listeners through the clues and plot twists. Sheh brings authenticity to her dialogue. Luscious descriptions of food--including ramen, hot pot, and other dishes, along with the recipes included--will have listeners' mouths watering. While this mystery can stand alone, it may be advantageous to be familiar with the first in the series. C.F. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Cousins Yale and Celine Yee's food stall at the Eastwood Village Night Market is doing stellar business, untarnished by the murderous goings-on that occurred when they first got their stall up and running. They are so successful that they are invited to join an exclusive dinner club with other Asian restaurant owners. Everything is going well until the group's president, Jeffery Vue, is murdered over a hot pot. There are plenty of suspects, but the police are especially interested in two people--restaurant owner Ai Ho and Yale's dad. Desperate to find the culprit, the cousins dig in and start an investigation of their own. The second installment in Chow's "LA Night Market" series (following Death by Bubble Tea) is full of scrumptious food descriptions, charming sleuths, and a most intriguing murder. L.A. local Yale and her Hong Kong-born cousin, Celine, are zestfully narrated by Stephanie Sheh, who captures their energy as they navigate the intricacies of family and the restaurant community. VERDICT A wonderful cozy, seasoned with delicious food descriptions and just the right amount of mystery. Recipes at the end of the novel offer listeners a chance to make the dishes Chow lovingly describes.--Elyssa Everling
